Chapter 4 is a chapter on foundational lessons that need to be taught for independence, breaking this into two categories; developing digital citizens and managing devices in the classroom. This chapter goes through all eleven of the lessons, tells you why you should teach the lessons and how you should go about doing it. This is a great resource for teachers to use, and I believe will come in handy for me. One of the lessons, Where Do We See Technology in Our Life, is a lesson to examine your own thoughts about technology. I really like this lesson because it reminded me of me. I always assume students will get out phones and not pay attention to anything else I am saying or even at home when my fiancĂ© has his phone out while I am trying to talk, I think that’s it, he no longer is hearing me, but this lesson focuses on determining if they really are learning and just need something in their hands to keep them busy. This leads me to think about other assignments or projects where I could actually let the student use their device to complete it. The information in this chapter is important because technology is become the main source used in the classrooms today. I need to know how to react to it and how to teach with it and get ideas for how to make sure students are using it in the appropriate ways.
ReplyDeleteChapter 5 is on reflection and assessment. I found this chapter to be useful and insightful. It tells you why reflection on your day is so important and what to think about when doing so. Like the chapter discusses, the teacher’s day does not just end whenever the students leave for the day. The rest of the night is grading, reflecting on your day, and what to do to get ready for tomorrow. In this chapter, there is an online survey that you can give your students to get feedback on how they think the days lessons went. This is a great way to see what your students are thinking and what to do next time to make it go smoother. This is something I will implement in my classroom. Another idea for this type of survey for students is to have a folder students take home with sections in it. These sections are working on it, almost there, and got it. Students can place a sticky note under whatever section they believe they are on for the lesson or day, and write on the sticky note whatever they need to work on, or if they have any questions. Having students reflect on their day and lessons learned, is just as important as teachers reflecting.
I also really liked the Online survey idea. Like I mentioned in my blog, it think receiving feedbacks and comments not only help teachers where they are lacking but it gives them an opportunity to explore and try new methods.
DeleteI also found sticky notes to be very useful because they help students break their goals or projects into smaller goals and help them visualize where they are at each time. I think every student should know about this tool to follow the progress of their project or personal goals overtime.

ReplyDeleteChapter 4 highlights the importance of independence and how to encourage students to use learning tools such as technology autonomously. These tips include to help students identify how technology is used around them or by them, to show them how technology can be used in their class work and avoid it distractions, to help students understand the rights and responsibilities they have when using digital tools, to encourage students to troubleshoot tools when not working to establish a mindset where students support each other and look for solutions, to encourage (create chance for) students to share tips and tricks with the class to help them identify area of proficiency, to teach intellectual property and that their work is valued, to teach them they have to give credit to words other works, to teach students how to get rid of distractions and prioritize their activities and technology use, and to finally teach them where to get information and how to share their work and collaborate on online.
ReplyDeleteChapter 5 discusses the importance of reflection and assessment in teaching and learning. The author discusses how teachers need to keep improving their teaching practices by reflecting on their instructions, analyzing what works, observing students and evaluating student works, and discussing different approaches with colleagues. The author also encourages teachers to use technology to examine student’s growth by observing students’ digital work such blogs and videos they share and by collecting students’ feedbacks through digital tools such as digital exit tickets. The author also encourages to introduce students to daily reflection, sticky notes in a folder, digital stickies, and notebook reflections, which are tools for student self-reflection. These tools help students identify their strengths and needs, prompts students to set small goals, and follow their progress overtime.
The information from both chapters provide great tips for how to incorporate technology with the existing teaching practices to enhance them and make them more effective. I can definitely utilize these tips when I am teaching in the future. Moreover, some of the tools introduced in chapter 5 such Digital Stickies are great tools for self-reflecting, which are very useful for all different professions. They provide a great way to follow your progress towards any goal, and I will use these tools as I continue my higher education.
I think teaching students "The Priority Hierarchy" at a young age is really important so that it becomes a habit. A lot of high school students and college students hate writing papers and their complain is it takes up so much of their time when the real reason is because they haven't established their priorities.
DeleteThe part about reflection is so important, for both teachers and students. At the end of the day, teachers need to reflect on their teaching and see what went wrong and what went right for the day. Having students reflect on how they think the lesson went, will help the teacher get ideas on what needs to change.
DeleteChapter 4, “Foundational Lessons for Independence” introduces eleven different foundational lessons that must be practiced or taught to students to help them become independent in their work. These lessons are broken down into two different categories, they are 1. Developing a mindset for becoming a digital citizen and 2. Establishing basic care and management procedures. Category no.1 focusses on helping students identify the ways technology is being used in our lives whether it impacts us positively or negatively, it focusses on teaching them the importance of understanding the fact that stepping into a digital community comes with responsibility and it focusses on lessons like Troubleshooting 101 where its main aim is to establish a mindset of students helping students and push them forward to look for solutions on their own. Moreover, this category touches upon safeguarding our intellectual Property and teaching them how to make the best use of technology by establishing priorities. Category no.2 on the other hand emphasizes on teaching students about device management, exploring new applications and teaching them how one can manage electronic files and share them in the easiest way possible. In Chapter 5, the author discusses the importance of making reflection a daily habit. Reflecting on the effectiveness of the lessons and gathering up ideas for the next day based on the students’ responses and interactions must be practiced daily in order to make the lessons go smoothly. I personally really liked the Digital Discussion Survey idea because the feedbacks will not only help teachers understand where they are lacking but it will help them come up with new ideas and new strategies to build a better classroom community.
ReplyDeleteFor those who are aspiring to be teachers, tips and lessons discussed in these two chapters will be very useful in their career. However, I am quite positive that the foundational lessons for independence will be of good help to me at some point in my career. The lessons in chapter 4 about troubleshooting problems and establishing priorities in order to make the best use of technology are two of my favorite lessons that I could highly encourage my peers later in future. Moreover, digital reflection will be a good strategy to open discussions and troubleshoot any problems.
I also think the Digital Discussion Survey is a great idea in order to get feedback because it won't take the students long, and it can really help the teachers know what needs to be changed or what went really well. I will definitely use this in my classroom.
DeleteThe section about troubleshooting is really important for students. It helps students become problem solvers and prompts them to try different approaches to solve problems before asking for help. I think this a great mindset for students to have.
